about
Shortly before her 100th birthday, Sebastian interviewed his grandmother Ella (1915–2015) about her life story. Her often astonishing, complex, and relatable account of her experiences became the inspiration for this production.
Ella combines dance, percussion, and documentary audio recordings into a delicately vibrating performance about the power of grandmothers. About home and foreign lands, about women’s life paths, and the pace of the world.
Four performers move through a stage set featuring a stove, a bathtub, a wooden floor, and other pieces of memorabilia that come together to form a home where people and memories appear and disappear. A puzzle of dreamlike images in which humor and tragedy converge with a strange lightness.
Ella is a play that rolls up its sleeves. That tackles things head-on, cleans up, and airs the place out. Atmospheric, somber, defiant, and warm-hearted.
